Tips
Some of the most important things to
remember are:
- Never open email attachments ( unless you absolutely need to
or know that they are safe ) this is now the number one way to
get viruses on your computer.
- Try to keep the programs starting up with you computer to a
minimum. ( although convenient, this slows down you computer
allot, and can even cause it to crash.
- When you have a problem WRITE IT DOWN!! ( exactly what the
error message says, and what you were doing at the time ). this
will help who ever fixes it.
- Never install homemade software that is copied unless you
absolutely trust who gave it to you. And never install
copyrighted software that has been copied!
- When online do not give out information unless you want it
given out to everybody. If you fill out forms online make sure
you are on a one-to-one secure connection with the site by
looking for the security lock on the lower right hand corner of
the screen. ( yellow padlock ) just above the clock. When you
see this lock it is safe to fill out information.
- Try to use the defragmenter for your hard drive at least
once a month, this will keep you system running as fast as it
can.
- Keep your antivirus software up to date!! Look for updates
at least every two weeks.
- Watch your children!! The best way to keep your children off
of adult sites is you! Software does not work. Teach your
children how to use bookmarks, and you save their sites. or you
go to new sites first to see what it is...
- Watch your hard drive space, keep at least one GIG available
for windows to use.
- When online and a web site asks to install software before
you can do something DON'T DO IT
unless you know what it will do for sure, some sites use these
downloads for tracking you and giving out viruses. They are most
of the time next to imposable to uninstall.
- The definition of a computer virus is; a program or file
that is installed that does damage to your PC by doing things to
it you do not wish to have done and have no control over..
- Use the Help given in windows first to try to fix your
problems, this will also give you some added experience with you
PC.
- Use a good quality surge suppressor for your computer and
monitor, this will save you allot of grief.
- When you are online and your computer locks up or crashes,
it is not necessarily the fault of your PC. When you are online
you become connected to many other computers or servers ( this
is called a network ). If any of these are having problems so
can you! Try going to another site if it works then go back to
the one you wanted etcetera, then you will know if it is just
that site or not.
